Human Immuno-Deficiency Virus

Movers Bishop of Bendigo

That this Synod, acknowledging the threat the preventable life-threating HIV virus poses to our whole community:

(a) commends the Federal and Statement Governments and many caring agencies for their educational and
practical achievements thus far;

(b) requests the Standing Committee of General Synod to encourage the establishment of a national network
amongst Anglicans involved in AIDS ministries as a first step in the development of a national strategy throughout this Church;

(c) reaffirms its belief in the Christian standard of faithful monogamous relationships while supporting the
Government and medical agencies who seek to prevent the spread of the disease by introducing needle exchange programmes and encouraging the use of condoms by both heterosexuals and homosexuals;

(d) notes the need to take special measures to reduce the spread of the virus in closed institutions such as
prisons; and

(e) encourages State and Local governments to tighten and enforce the laws concerning health and prostitution.
